Lots of mod's for Netgear routers including a back door to gain root level access to the vxWorks OS.Seattlewireless net has an excellent overview of how to enable and access the vxWorks shell and dd-wrt com offer free replacement firmware. In most cases, NetGear devices seem to execute mod's and replacements with greater stability than the Linksys WRTG54 since Netgear offers resources to do so while Linksys hates aftermarket OS's and does everything possible to sabotage their reliability

Unless you've already had better experiences with a different AP in the same house with your iMac and other devices then you should consider the following points before buying more routers:Are there microwave ovens near the PC or router? Are there digital cordless phones in use and does the network performance suffer the most if the phone is in use ?Are you in an apartment building, is the router or PC near a separating wall from a neighbor who may have a microwave or phone on the other side
